Deriving stylistic and material inspiration from their 2024 Billy & George sculptures in Harriet Spanel Park and taking their name from the founder of the city, William Bellingham, FIND BILLY! continued uckiood’s mission to create moments of childlike wonder in everyday life. Utilizing the highly accessible, visual language of childhood, FIND BILLY! aimed to engage both children and adults by providing instantaneous and uplifting pops of joy within the urban landscape. Despite its expansive footprint across the downtown area, FIND BILLY! was an intimate project which encouraged visitors and residents to take the time to closely interact with their surroundings. Rather than presenting a single piece of monumental public art which captivates fleetingly, FIND BILLY! was a truly experiential and communal piece of art wherein residents and visitors encountered with the sculptures organically or in isolation - as a colorful surprise on a familiar daily route or as a stand-alone activity with a defined focus. Via a dedicated scavenger hunt produced by the City of Bellingham, residents were encouraged to navigate, observe, wayfind, and document - as well as explore new and unfamiliar spaces in the downtown area.
Green Billy was originally installed to the rear of Old City Hall above Maritime Heritage Park, Orange Billy outside the Whatcom Museum Family Interactive Gallery on Flora St, Pink Billy adjacent to Depot Market Square on East Maple St, and Blue Billy outside the Federal Building on West Magnolia St. The four sculptures are now placed in official City buildings and offices across Bellingham.
