BIG PUFFA (The Generator)
2023 - 24
Fiberglass, resins, wood, steel. 6ft 8in x 5ft 8in x 6ft 2in (excluding platform). Approx. 300lb.
An abstract and playful representation of connection, (re-)generation and creation, BIG PUFFA is the largest, free-standing sculpture to be created by uckiood to date. It is held in the permanent collection of The Conru Art Foundation.
Organic in shape, BIG PUFFA is a tactile and whimsical work which invites viewers to engage through touch, embrace and physical mimicry. Taking its cue from the collective experience of dance music, BIG PUFFA’s emphatic pose with arms aloft evokes a moment of unbridled and childlike joy, his/her tiny, simplified head hints at a loss of ego, while the stylized, biomorphic form is reminiscent of an animated molecule which is ever expanding and shifting. This sense of irrepressible transmutation is emphasized by the detail and finish of the sculpture. The three-dimensional, colored cylinders merge and collect into pulsating clusters. These clusters - representative of individuals or groups - generate a cellular life force which propagates, spreads and coalesces, creating a dynamic mass of movement throughout the entire form and the space around it. BIG PUFFA is clearly evocative of the exciting potential of growth wherein everyone can come together to connect, develop, renew and thrive. In simple terms, it is a sculpture which speaks of a future full of possibility and positivity.
