82,000

2022

82,000 is currently on loan to the Museum of Sonoma County (a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum) in Santa Rosa CA. It forms part of the ‘A Question of Balance’ show, produced in collaboration with the Pacific Rim Sculptors and the International Sculpture Center. Runs through May 26 2024.

82,000 is the latest small-scale sculpture from uckiood - and one of the most personal in the studio’s history. Taking its name from the 82,000 claimants in the ongoing Boy Scouts of America sexual abuse lawsuit, it examines in graphic terms both the physical horrors and psychological trauma experienced by children and young adults at the hands of their abusers within the Boy Scout organization.

Humanity is abstracted and reduced to a vase-like shape wherein the endless serpentine strangulation of the form is beautifully balanced from top to bottom and left to right to indicate the equivalent effects of abuse upon both mind and body. This sense of stasis is further emphasized by the muted, monochrome palette and infinite puncturing of the form at both front and back.

All these elements speak of a ceaseless suffering, the decades-long coverup of abuse by the organization and, most importantly, the enforced silence and shame endured by its victims.

82,000 is made from fiberglass, polymer clay and enamel. It measures 17in (H) x 11in (W) x 14in (D).
